SUMMER, DRAWING DOWN.

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

Tonight was the last of the nine Thursday-night summer concerts at Kruger’s Farm on Sauvie Island. We are late to this phenomenon, but it is a wonderful family-friendly venue, littered with kids of all ages. The cost is only $5 for parking, a tip for the band, and whatever you spend on good food and drink–a bargain! (Plus whatever you spend at Tom Kruger’s farm market on the premises–a dangerous place indeed, budgetarily speaking.) In any event, we met Eric, Martha, and The Gus’s close contemporary Owen there. Hijinx did in fact ensue, and because the SLR makes me get all art-wacky, there were Photographs taken as well. A couple of samples follow this link to the Flickr set.

WE’RE BACK!

Sunday, August 27th, 2006

We are back from our week in Canada, tanned, rested and ready. Rather than pour all the photos into the blog, let me just point you to the Flickr set.

We got up at 5 a.m. yesterday to catch the 6:30 ferry so we could make it back in time for my fantasy football draft. Of course, by the time we arrived at the draft, I was exhausted, and the many beers I drank to rehydrate hit me like a truck. But I checked my roster this morning and it appears that the draft came out fine nonetheless. All is well.

A FEW RANDOM THINGS; NO PICS.

Things have been hectic. Not bad, just hectic. TDW has been having meetings during the day and hearings in the evenings (she is at one now) and I have been swamped at work. The Gus has been frenetically busy, picking up Cheddar Bunnies off the tray of his high chair and throwing them onto the floor, cackling.

Tomorrow morning I have my first oral argument before the Oregon Court of Appeals. I’ve written lots of appellate briefs but have not had the privilege of actually arguing my own work product. (Actually, the underlying work product isn’t my own, in that I didn’t make the trial court record below, which is the actual material from which an appellate lawyer seeks to draw out simple and logical themes. But anyway.) I will report back. Unlike regular trials, one doesn’t know after argument whether one is returning with one’s shield or on it–wait for the written decision somewhere between three months and eighteen months out.

Next week TDW, The Gus and I are on vacation, so expect no posts here. We return for my annual fantasy football draft. The Gus will turn ten months old in Canada. Expect many pictures, unless he is eaten by an orca. (we will actually keep him well away from orcas, especially in his super-cute seal suit.)

Last, and apropos of nothing, please check out this video of Al Gore at the TED Conference in February, talking a little about global warming but first showing a dry, self-mocking wit. Query: had that wit been on public display in 2000, what would the world look like now?
